Ch 8 Blog 1

Organizations are tied to their environment the same way that a living creature is tied to the environment that they live in. The environment of an organization can be healthy or it can be toxic. Members of an organization determine if the environment is healthy or toxic through human behavior and communication. Schools are tied to their environment through their affect on the community. They supply a learning environment for the community, provide jobs, and influence the local population with an influx of young people. Organizations like colleges have an ethical obligation to encourage a healthy environment. They should be having a positive impact on the community through community relations and taking care of the campus. Hopefully that healthy environment will have a positive impact by seeing the organization grow and expand to further fulfill the needs of the community.

  1. I agree with you that organizations are tied to their environment the same way that a living creature is tied to the environment that they live in. I think that we can determine if the environment is either healthy or toxic. I do not like that the way some people are trying to help "clean" the environment just sees it as a selling tool instead of actually caring about what there "objective" is. Most classes I have been in have talked about trying to make the environment cleaner and things like that, and their advice I listen to because I know that they actually care and they are not just trying to sell me something.

  2. I like your use of metaphor in describing the way an organization is tied to the environment. Though, I believe that being toxic or healthy is two-fold and depends on both elements not one alone. Both elements can have a positive and/or negative effect on each other. If the community the organization resides is "toxic" this can cause members of the organization to be toxic as well. Typically members of an organization reside in the community which surrounds them, and thus are a product of their community. Though, an organization which produces "toxic" product (whether discussing physical product or non physical yet influential product) can adversely affect the community. A balance is required. And the support of the balance can, I believe come from both parties.
