Chapter 1 Blog 1

I really admire the pastor of my church as a public speaker. He is a very likable, believable, and passionate speaker that captures the audiences attention. It is so easy to sit and listen to Ray Johnson (Bayside Church, Granite Bay) speak on even difficult topics. He has power to persuade others through ethos, pathos, and logos. I believe that ethos, personal character, is the most important in his case. He is credible, and churches worldwide ask him to come and speak. He arranges his sermons is a very easy to follow and logical format which fits into the logos classification. Pathos is seen in his ability to evoke emotion from the audience when appropriate.
I tend to be a very logical communicator, and find it difficult to communicate with too much emotion at times. I do fit into Aristotle's classification of logos, where i use logic and wording in order to be persuasive.

  1. I'm so glad to hear that you like the pastor's speaking abilities. My husband and I go to Bayside in Placerville, and we love the pastor there. :)

  3. I love listening to Ray's preaching, it's so moving. I also attend Bayside church, although not as much as I should. He is so good with his words and he keeps me strong in my faith. I like that you see him as a speaker that you admire, that's awesome! I also agree that he speaks much more strongly with ethos, and it’s moving. He knows how to get the point across and he’s always relating his words to someone’s story, if not his own. He definitely knows how to get to my emotions with his moving words, I enjoy going to listen to him speak on Sundays.

  4. It's always fun to "meet" other Baysiders. :) I've visited Bayside Lincoln and Bayside Plumas Lake, and i've never been disappointed! However, Pastor Ray is so fantastic that we make the commute from Yuba City to go to service in Granite Bay.
